FALLURE the Only Way To Find Your True Limit

Aug 23, 2022

I love learning.

It keeps me stretching and growing.  Life is so much more interesting and full of new opportunities because I am always willing to learn.

I think it has kept me young at heart and full of life.  I think it will do the same for you.

Keeping your mind curious and open is probably the most valuable behavior. Period.

Right up there at the top next to commitment.

Commitment is something that happens again and again . . . sometimes in a single day.  You may commit to a project, driving a specific strategy or show-up 100% in all you do.  It may be a commitment to your relationship, to being your best when you walk through the door after a long day or to keep your priorities in alignment with your values . . . saying NO more often.

Commitment isn't easy.  The initial commitment could be.  As you move forward and are facing challenges and obstacles is when the clarity comes about how committed you really are.

Recently my MasterMind and I committed to using a productivity tool based on the philosophy of The 12 Week Year.   I love experimenting to increase efficiency based on the time and energy saved to accomplish work.  (Yes, I'm a total nerd.)  In this book by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington - The 12 Week Year claims to create focus and clarity on what matters most with a sense of urgency that means the important stuff gets done.

Let's just say it is seriously intense to do and so much more challenging than I anticipated to change my patterns of planning and execution.

And I am committed!  I am committed to stay curious about how this system might make a difference in my business and my quality of work & life.  So far?  I'm impressed.  I'm in week 5 and amazed at how much I am starting and finishing.  Stay tuned.

A big differentiator in the system is just getting super clear on how much being truly committed makes a difference.  Which brings me to FALLURE.

The term "fallure" was written about in The 12 Week Year,  from an article in Fast Company written by businessman and rock climber Jim Collins (I'm pretty sure he is Tim's brother).

Any who . . .  Jim learned about Fallure through his extreme rock climbing excursions.

Failure is often misused in place of Fallure.  They are VERY different.  Let me loosely paraphrase and explain.

Failure and fallure. The difference is subtle, but it is all the difference in the world. In fallure you fall; in failure you let go. In fallure, you still do not get to your [goal, destination, win], but you never let go.

"Going to fallure means full commitment to go up–even if the odds of success are less than 20%, 10%, or even 5%. You leave nothing in reserve, no mental or physical resource untapped."

In fallure, you never give yourself a psychological out.  You don't allow yourself to take a trip to Excuseville.  You won't hear yourself say things like, “Well, I didn’t really play full-out . . . Didn't give it everything. . . . Maybe I would have made it had I given it my all."

In fallure, you always give your best . . . your personal 100%.  You do it despite the fear, pain, obstacles, and uncertainty.

To the peanut gallery and your critiques, failure and fallure look similar, but the inner experience of fallure is totally different from that of failure.

You’ll only find your true limit

when you go to fallure,

not failure.

When you are a life-learner you take calculated risks.  You also are willing to stretch and grow out of your comfort zone.  Both of these can make those around you very uncomfortable.

Have you ever been encouraged to fail?  Ha!  As a businesswoman I can't tell you how many people in my life would be much more comfortable if I had just taken the tried and true path.

In business and in life we don't know what is always coming next.  This alone can make 100% commitment so difficult.

AND. . .

I bring you this differentiator between failure and fallure because only YOU will know which you are choosing.  You, my sweet friend, are all that needs to know.

I now am able to look back at my life as a series of choices between failure or fallure. And still the next step in life is unclear, sometimes scary and perplexing.  That is really enough to keep from making a fully committed attempt at showing up 100%.   Will you fully commit?

We fail mentally. We let go.

We take a nice, controlled fall, rather than risking a bigger fall. Because going to fallure in life is scary, but rarely if ever is it dangerous. Whether it be leaving your safe career and starting a business or pursuing a plant-based eating lifestyle or claiming your true love or publishing a book, fallure rarely means you are doomed.

And most important, the only way to find your true limit is to go to fallure, not failure.  Your mental effort defines success. (kudos to the brilliant brain!)

"For in the end, climbing is not about conquering the rock; it is about conquering yourself. And this is what fallure is all about."

I love the framework around what defines success for me and FALLURE gives meaning to the goal.  Where will you choose to embrace fallure?
