Am I Ready For Coaching (Again)? 5 Questions to Ask

Sep 13, 2025

Most people know coaching works. They’ve seen colleagues level up, leaders transform, or friends finally break through old patterns with the help of a coach. But knowing it works and being ready for it yourself are two different things.

So how do you know if now is the right time? Ask yourself these five questions.

1.  Are You Willing to Own Your Growth?

Coaching is for people who believe they can shape their future. If you’re stuck in the loop of blaming your boss, your industry, or the economy, you’ll keep stalling. Yes, constraints are real — but your agency within them is more powerful than you realize.

When you take radical responsibility for your growth, coaching becomes a catalyst for change.

Self-Coaching Prompt: What’s one area of your life or work where you’ve been waiting for things to change? What would shift if you decided to take ownership instead?

2.  Do You Have a Vision for Your Coaching Journey?

You don’t need a perfect roadmap before you start, but you do need a sense of what you want to change. Do you want more confidence in leadership? Clarity in relationships? A calmer inner life?

Coaching sharpens your vision. And with clarity, the transformation you’re looking for becomes possible.

Self-Coaching Prompt: What would success look like for you on the other side of coaching?

3. Are You Prepared to Be Proactive?

Results don’t come from showing up once a week. They come from leaning in — bringing your thoughts to each session, following through on action steps, and reflecting in between.

Even reserving 15 minutes before and 30 minutes after each call to prepare and reflect can change everything.

Self-Coaching Prompt: How will I hold myself accountable to do the inner and outer work between sessions?

4. Are You Ready to Feel Some Discomfort?

Growth doesn’t live in the comfort zone. Real coaching will stretch you, challenge long-held stories, and invite you to experiment with new ways of being. That’s the point.

If you’re nodding along here, you’re already the kind of person who will benefit most.

Self-Coaching Prompt: What’s one belief or pattern I’ve been avoiding that I might be ready to face with support?

5. Are You Willing to Invest in Yourself?

Time. Energy. Money. Coaching asks for all three. And yet, the ROI — the actual return on your investment — is profound. Clients often tell me they wish they’d started sooner because the breakthroughs saved them years of struggle.

I’ve been there myself. The best investments I’ve made in my life were in coaches who saw me clearly and helped me grow faster than I could alone.

Self-Coaching Prompt: Where in my life has waiting cost me more than investing would have?
